Man Killed In Reno Pedestrian Accident on Christmas Eve

A pedestrian accident across from the Bonanza casino in Reno early Christmas eve has resulted in the death of Vincent Yowell, 54. Mr. Yowell, a resident of Reno, NV, was hit by two cars as he attempted to cross North Virginia Ave in Reno at approximately 4:30 in the morning on December 24th. One of the automobiles involved in the accident stopped and waited for police to arrive. The second car, however, left the scene. Police had begun searching for the 2nd vehicle in the accident and even offered a $2000 reward via the Secret Witness program in the Reno pedestrian accident.

The Washoe County traffic death caused traffic on the highly travelled road. Both lanes were closed on North Virginia as police investigated the accident into Christmas morning.

Reno police have stated that they did not believe the accident was due to the use of alcohol or drugs while driving. The second driver in the accident contacted police on Wednesday to say that he was in the vicinity of the accident and thought he had hit a large animal with his car. Police and the Washoe County district attorney are attempting to determine whether or not they will press charges of fleeing the scene from a Washoe County pedestrian crash. Police investigators are saying that they believe the man crossing North Virginia was in the cross walk at the time of the accident.

The area of the accident on North Virginia has been the sight of an additional pedestrian fatality in the past couple years. Moving farther south and north from the cross walk in front of the Bonanza casino, there have been an additional two recent pedestrian deaths, one in 2011 and one in January 2012. Area residents have been requesting the Nevada Department of transportation install additional lighting on the crosswalks in this highly travelled section of road.

Police are urging pedestrians and drivers to use more caution when driving in the area.
