The rankings are out, the votes are in, the metrics have been calculated and weighted and averaged, and in terms of car accidents, Reno is listed as the Number 6 safest city in America by the insurance giant Allstate. There are many caveats to this, and many things we wonder if it takes into account. For starters, is it just Reno, or the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area that was measured? We have seen a lot of accidents recently, like pedestrian accidents in Sparks, tons of vehicle accidents on Highway 50 between Stateline, Nevada, and Virginia City, Nevada. The report on vehicle accidents, with Reno ranked the sixth safest city in America, and produced by Allstate Insurance, takes really only factor into account: the number of crashes. This report defines crashes as anything that led to a claim being filed for property damage, in Washoe County for example. Right off the bat, that’s a big methodological question mark: it could be that Reno has fewer fender benders from people mildly speeding in Nevada, but more terrible and fatal car crashes. The report did take an average, weighted, over a two year period, which would help smooth out any effects of weather that might show up if you did the report just over a three or six month period. The report should also be taken with a few grains of salt in terms of its generalizability, too, as Allstate only covers 10% of drivers nationwide. While an impressive number, this would not make statisticians very happy, as it is a self-selecting group and not necessarily a representative sample. At least Reno does better than Las Vegas in car accidents!
